Dinosaurs on the Loose!

November 5, 2014

Dinosaurs took over Buddings two weeks ago during Thursday afternoon’s early literacy program! We learned about the letter “D” through music, movement, and stories starring our favourite prehistoric creatures.

Some of the stories we read include How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon? by Jane Yolen and The Day of the Dinosaur by Stan and Jan Berenstain. The kids had fun learning about these mysterious animals of long ago through literature. They were exposed a lot of new vocabulary, including the word “extinct”. One of our buddies, upon hearing  “extinct” for the first time in Day of the Dinosaur, exclaimed, “When you’re extinct, you’re stinky! You’d better go to the bathroom!” Needless to say, it provided a great opportunity to talk about extinction (and a good laugh, as well)!

After exploring the d-d-d-dinosaur through stories, the kids created letter “D” dinosaur crafts. The children were very creative with their dinosaurs, some choosing to make Triceratops and some deciding on Stegosaurus or Brachiosaurus instead. I was impressed at how many different species  they remembered from the books we read together! The crafts, pictured on your left, have been “living” in Buddings alphabet garden for the past two weeks, but will return to their rightful owners this week.

Once our letter “D” dinosaurs found a home in the alphabet garden, we set out to practice our writing by tracing upper and lower case “D” in the air with our fingers. We then began to practice printing our letters on paper and eventually made a letter “D” booklet to take home.

After all of that hard working practicing our printing, we celebrated the dinosaur with music and movement! “We are the dinosaurs marching, marching! We are the dinosaurs! What do you think of that? We are the dinosaurs marching, marching! We are the dinosaurs! We make the earth flat!” The children stomped up a storm to the Laurie Berkner hit We Are the Dinosaurs, moving to the music with gigantic dino-steps. Like most Laurie Berkner songs, We Are the Dinosaurs is a big hit at Buddings! Click the link to check out the song and video: We Are the Dinosaurs by The Laurie Berkner Band .

We will be exploring a new “Letter of the Week” every Thursday afternoon from 1:00-4:00. Swing by to add to our alphabet garden and have fun learning about letter sounds and print through stories, music, and movement!
